Birth of the Ministry History
The history of New Life Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ is very short in comparison to other churches or ministries; however, once the Lord Jesus gave the command, New Life has been on fire for Christ. Before there was the church, there was the ministry. Elder Tonya Parker Davis has always been an able preacher of the Word, originally called by God to launch a ministry. Out of that calling “New Life Ministries” was birthed on July 20, 2014. The capstone scripture was from 2 Corinthians 15:17, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”
Normally, a budding ministry would use radio or TV to get the word to the people. New Life Ministries, however, took a different direction. First came the business cards, and then Elder Davis chose to take advantage of social media to help promote the ministry. After spending nearly a year promoting and developing New Life Ministries, Elder Davis was led to plant a brick and mortar church where the people of God could come together to worship.
On June 14, 2015, the original members and friends of New Life Ministries came together to worship the Lord in the Armor of God Church sanctuary on Mills Street, Winterville. From its inception, the Lord continued to add disciples to the church. Sisters Nevonia Brown and Sheritta Brown along with Brother Rashad May Jr, and Detric Jamari Everrett were the first members to join. New Life Ministries joined the Southern Assembly Churches of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Eastern District of America on June 29th and became New Life Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ (NLC). In its first 3 months, membership grew from four members to fourteen with the addition of the Blake Family. Within such a small membership, the Lord provided every gift the church needed.
Initially, NLC instituted a new members class, bible study, Sunday school, and worship service on 2nd and 4th Sundays. NLC increased its presence on Facebook and developed a website located at www.newlifecoc.org. It was critical during the time at Armor of God Church, our temporary location, that we gather what was needed to be ready for our future move to a building of our own.
A communion set was donated to NLC, and we held our first communion service on September 13th. NLC held church service on the second and fourth Sundays in June, July, and August at the Armour of God Church on Mills Street, Winterville, NC. The Pastor was Reverend Bennie Williams. He leased the building to New Life and assessed us $250.00 per service. We gladly compensated Armour of God, as they had provided a facility that we could gather, worship and praise our God.
On August 22, 2015, New Life held its first Disciples of Christ Youth Fellowship (DCYF) which was a back-to-school bash and cookout. The cookout was held at the home of Elder Tonya and Deacon Davis. School supplies were provided to the children. On September 13th, NLC held its first communion service, utilizing the donated communion set, in fellowship with the Life Changing Ministry Church of Christ Church family.
A few weeks later, the Lord showed Elder Tonya a building located at 1456-C Worthington Road in Greenville, NC. Deacon Gary Davis began to order chairs and tables to furnish the church. Laminate was installed in the vestibule, a pulpit was erected, and additional supplies were ordered. Soon, items such as chairs were delivered. Deacon Sam and Mother Blake came and assembled every chair and placed them in the sanctuary. They assisted Deacon Davis with the layout of the church. The building was painted, and carpet was installed. A desk and chairs were ordered for the Pastor’s Study. On October 10th, a church dedication service was held with the Southern Assembly Board of Elders presiding. Our theme for the first year was “Walking in the Newness of Life”.
In November, NLC rendered its first service as a church family at Bonnie Bass in Kinston, NC. On November 22nd, NLC hosted its first collaborative church service at the Worthington Road sanctuary with Life Changing Ministry rendering the service; Pastor Eric Young delivered the message. New Life Church has been a proponent of mission and community outreach from its inception. For Thanksgiving, we provided a full Thanksgiving meal for a family in need.
In December, NLC held its quarterly business meeting and communion at the Worthington Road Church Campus. In addition, the Youth Department held its first community service outreach event at Ayden Court and Rehabilitation Center. They sang songs and made Christmas cards and ornaments for the residents. New Life Church ended the year with 16 faithful members: to God be the glory!

Our members would gather for prayer and then joyfully prepare a hot breakfast on the 1st Saturday morning of each month. The modifications were pleasing to all. On the first Sunday of the New Year, we welcomed Sister Tequila Strong as a new member of the church. In addition, it was the desire of Pastor Tonya to incorporate a time dedicated to the millennials. New Life Church utilized social media (Facebook) to offer Sunday School at 9:30 and a Live at 5:00 worship service on Sunday afternoons. Pastor Tonya also utilized Zoom to fellowship with parishioners. This was a time of fasting and prayer. Business meetings were held virtually.
